When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, most of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to view and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises at the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice more symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these red flags sound like what you are feeling with your furnace, it may be time to start looking into a new system.
