How to keep your Columbia home comfortable this winter

Heating

The dropping temperatures in Columbia aren’t heading anywhere, and while it’s easy to dream about the warmer temperatures, it’s important to remember that you can remain just as comfortable during winter. Of course, your furnace plays a large role in this, which is why it’s so vital to keep up with annual furnace service.

We do have to mention that there are few things that will offer as much to your comfort this winter as a well-tuned furnace. That’s why furnace service is recommended be done annually. After all, who wants to spend a frigid winter not knowing if their furnace is going to keep them covered the whole time?

Already check off your annual furnace service? Here are a few other things you can do to help keep your home comfortable:

  • Energy audit — many energy companies will provide an energy audit for your home so you can find areas that need fixed. You might be surprised what areas are permitting hot or cold air to sneak out.
  • Weatherstripping — regardless of which door it is, doors permit the opportunity for a lot of cold air to get in to your home. However, when your door is shut, you can still have air making its way inside. Check to see if your weatherstripping is all good or if it’s worn, torn, or damaged in any other way that could be letting cold air inside. If you notice any problems, weatherstripping is basic to replace and could take care of the problem.
  • Recessed lighting — one of the most common places for air leaks may be your recessed lighting. Depending on the light’s age, they could be letting all the hot air in your home escape through your ceiling. Fixing this is as simple as sealing it with caulk or aluminum tape.

These handful tips are just a place to start, but do note that there are other simple fixes you can complete once you’ve had annual furnace service completed. Many of them can be cost-effective and easy things to complete on the weekend.
